I am Co-Director of Cogito Epistemology Research Centre and Professor of Philosophy at the University of Glasgow.
My research focuses on issues in epistemology, philosophy of language, the philosophy of science, ethics and their intersection. I am the author of The Nature and Normativity of Defeat (CUP, 2023), Inquiry, Knowledge, and Understanding (OUP, 2021), Sharing Knowledge: A Functionalist Account of Assertion (with M. Simion, CUP, 2021), and Good Thinking: A Knowledge First Virtue Epistemology (Routledge 2018). In addition, I have co-edited Virtue Theoretic Epistemology: New Methods and Approaches (with J. Meylan, funded by SNF (Swiss National Science Foundation), ~ GBP 500,000), 'Dimensions of Wellbeing' (with M. Simion, industry funded, ~ GBP 650,000), 'A Virtue Epistemology of Trust' (with A. Carter and M. Simion, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, ~ GBP 250,000) and 'Justified Belief: Knowledge-First Virtue Epistemological Approach' (funded by FWO (Research Foundation Flanders) and KU Leuven, ~ EUR 450,000), and 'The Value of Knowledge' (funded by FWO, ~ EUR 150,000). I am Director of The British Society for the Theory of Knowledge and of The European Consortium for Knowledge and Information Research, Elected Member of the Executive Committee of the Mind Association, and Steering Committee Member of the European Epistemology Network and of the Social Epistemology Network. I am also Area Editor for Epistemology at Ergo, Member of the Editorial Board of The Philosophical Quarterly, and I have been Guest Editor for Synthese, Philosophical Issues, and Philosophical Topics.
